Nestled on the banks of the Cher in a green setting on the borders of Berry, Sologne and Touraine, Selles-sur-Cher is a charming village in Loir-et-Cher. Its heritage is particularly rich and offers a journey back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Note the remains of ancient defences such as the Colombière Gate, which has kept all its towers and is the last of the five gates that existed in the 13th century. Another interesting building is the 12th-century Abbey Church of Notre-Dame-la-Blanche and its magnificent white tuffeau façade interspersed with friezes. Admire its cloister with rib vaults and head to the crypt to see the tomb of St. Eusician, the patron saint of the village.
Continue your visit as far as the Ursuline convent and the Hôtel-Dieu hospital for the poor, of which only one original wing remains, the one overlooking the square. Both date from the 17th century. Also not to be missed is the castle, both a medieval fortress and a Renaissance residence, and you can also visit its pleasant park with century-old trees.
Before leaving, don't forget to taste the speciality of Selles-sur-Cher: an ash-coated goat's cheese in bluish colours that is sure to delight your taste buds.
