Populated since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the remains found on site, the territory of Agonac developed from the Middle Ages with the construction of a fortress to protect the region from Norman invasions in the 10th century. Dynamic and full of charm, this town in the southwest of France today benefits not only from the proximity of Périgueux, but also from an authenticity that testifies to a rich and ancient history.

Things to see and do

Originally built at the end of the 10th century, Agonac Castle has undergone many transformations over the centuries. Today a private dwelling, the one which was notably the residence of the bishops of Périgueux and site of defense against the Norman invasions, still today unveils vestiges of the enclosure and the keep from the 12th century, as well as buildings modified between the 16th and 19th century.

While strolling in this city of Dordogne, you will also be able to admire the exteriors of the manor of Agonac of the XVIIIth century, of the home of the Hospice of the XVIIth century or of the chartreuse of Pouliquet of the XIXth century or of the castle from Gourjou.

Agonac also has an interesting religious heritage, with in particular the Saint-Martin church classified as Historical Monuments. Built between the 11th and 12th centuries and completely renovated in the 19th century, it is a fine example of Romanesque architecture. Fortified between the 13th and 15th centuries, it reveals an elegant bell tower from the mid-18th century. Inside, it is possible to admire the remains of wall paintings from the 14th and 17th centuries.

Do not miss out on exploring the 19th century Notre-Dame chapel, the 14th century Salseyron gate which once protected the city, or taking a tour of the old town.
