This building, in the heart of Angoulême, formerly castle and county residence was transformed into town hall from 1858 to 1869 by the architect Paul Abadie son.
The latter has only two towers of the old castle: the polygonal dungeon built by the Lusignan in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and the round tower (or tower of the Valois) of the fifteenth century where was born in 1492, Marguerite de 'Angoulême, sister of Francis I.
The other parts of the building were built in an eclectic style, in keeping with the tastes of the nineteenth century and drawing from medieval, Renaissance and classical forms.
