Historically, Asté was once known for its carrot production, favored by light, sandy soil. Peaceful town in history, it is forging the face that we know today over the centuries, becoming little by little a hot spot of tourism in the region.
Visitors passing by appreciate its proximity to some of the most beautiful sites in the area, but also its architectural and natural heritage that is not lacking interest. Lovers of gastronomy will be seduced by the specialty of the place, the famous pie of Crastes cooked over a wood fire.
Formerly Asté was the carrot production village. The carrot, which had its seed, was sold throughout the department. The seed no longer exists, but continues in its memory, the feast of the carrot, "the caroutade", which takes place every year the first weekend of July, with the menu, beef with carrots.
Built in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Saint-Saturnin church has a beautiful pink marble entrance porch and interior furniture of great interest. Just opposite, the house of Ferrère and the Pyrenees Baroque traces the history of baroque art in the area.
Several small chapels also take place in the village, such as that of Saint-Roch built in the sixteenth century to fight against the epidemic of plague, and that of Notre-Dame installed on the site of the caves of Médous. Until the end of the 18th century it was a high place of pilgrimage to the Virgin.
High place of local tourism, the caves of Médous are natural caves dug by an underground river. Part of the visit takes place on a boat to better enjoy the area. Not far, it is possible to go to the fountain of Crastes known for its healing properties for skin problems and ulcers. From there, it is possible to take a hiking trail for a three-hour walk to the Helmet of Lheris and its 360 ° panorama.
While walking in the village of Asté, you can discover the laundrette covered in slate and renovated in the year 2010, as well as several small fountains and stones to wash. You will not miss to appreciate the ruins of the castle of the XVth century, with in particular the vestige of the west facade and its old murderer.
