Avord

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Cher

Municipality of Cher, in the heart of Berry, Avord takes place about twenty kilometers from Bourges. Known for hosting the second largest base of the French Air Force, which notably hosted Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in 1922, it is located not far from Baugy, Jussy-Champagne or Farges-en-Septaine.

Of ancient origin, the commune of Avord has distinguished itself in French military history since the 19th century. After hosting the first military infantry school of the army in 1873, it was chosen as the location of an important aeronautical station at the beginning of the 20th century.

Today still occupied by the French army, this city in central France also reveals an interesting architectural and historical heritage.

Things to see and do

Built in the 11th century, the Saint-Hugues church is now listed as a Historic Monument. A fine example of Romanesque architecture, it originally depended on the chapter of Saint-Outrille of the Château de Bourges. It reveals to its visitors a very beautiful western facade in three parts. It has undergone many transformations over the centuries, today presenting a bell tower with four bays.

To make the most of sunny days and take some lovely walks, head to the Pilsac pond, known in particular for sheltering grass carp. A wooded park is also accessible to the public, including a fruit area, country hedges and a children's play area.
