Beaumont-Pied-de-Boeuf is a village in the Sarthe, Pays de la Loire region, 35 kilometers south of Le Mans.
The communal territory, green, hilly and wooded, announces the Loir Valley and the nearby forest of Bercé and belongs to the historic region of Maine Angevin.
The name "pied-de-boeuf" refers to bays (sources).
The locality has about 500 inhabitants. It has several hamlets and has always had an agricultural vocation. Orchards and hives are also exploited now. The built heritage and preserved landscapes of the town will appeal to hikers and green tourism enthusiasts in general.
A visit of the village in the form of discovery of its historical heritage can begin with the church Notre-Dame, built in the eleventh century in a Romanesque style, remodeled in the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries. The altarpieces of the eighteenth century and the southern chapel, ornamental motifs of Renaissance style. The Romanesque portal is semicircular 12th century. Finally, we will admire a remarkable Pieta of the fifteenth century polychrome wood that represents Christ and the Virgin surrounded by St. John and Mary Magdalene.
At the entrance of the village, then, an astonishing circular tower with ornate openings of a style announcing the Renaissance is the last vestige of the medieval fortress of the fifteenth century. This castle controlled the valley of the Yre, tributary of the Loir which crosses the locality, and consisted of a square building flanked by two towers, and surrounded by moats. On the hill, therefore, there remains only one tower, but the old cellars of the seigneurial building are still visible, and have a time used to extract stone tufa.
Always on the territory, according to the hamlets, one will be able to stop at the manor of the Faverie, built in the XVIe century on a hill, in a Renaissance style. More recent, the Château de la Couetterie was built in the 18th century in a classic residential style. Renovated, it now has a hotel vocation.
Finally, testimony of a very early human occupation, at a place called Le Perray, a menhir from the Neolithic period was registered as historical monuments.
