The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design Bordeaux is housed in the mansion of Lalande, built in 1778 for a parliamentary counselor with also by marriage plantations in Santo Domingo.
After the Revolution, this beautiful building known in the nineteenth century a succession of wealthy owners, most traders.
It was not until 1924 that the first municipal museum is housed in this case, the "museum of ancient art." The mansion is then refurbished and decorated according to the eighteenth mode, wanting to mirror the lifestyle of the nobility and the great Bordeaux bourgeoisie at the end of the old regime, and revealing de facto first sketch of the future museum of Decorative arts.
It opened under that name in 1955, and it also becomes Design Museum from 2013.
The fund collections include furniture, accent furniture or typically "port", ceramic pieces and silverware or falling tableware such. Mostly, these pieces were made and for the Bordeaux interiors of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the city was a major trading port turned to the colonies.
Made from gifts or bequests, the fund also includes a large collection of ceramics from the Maghreb.
More recently, in addition to the presentation of its collections, the museum's mission is to present the art of design.
The settlement program regularly lectures and workshops, especially for children.
