Located at the foot of Revermont, nestled at the bottom of a valley between two Jura foothills which gently descend towards the Bresse plain, landlocked in the Jura department, Cuiseaux is the easternmost town of Saône-et-Loire.
Its origins are very old. 2 kilometers to the north of the town, there is the prehistoric site of La Balme. Its toponym would be of Celtic origin. It is necessary to wait until 1107 so that the existence of Cuiseaux is attested by writings. The lords of Cuisel belonged to a powerful family, probably from the county house of Burgundy. Its privileged location favored its development. Cuisel was a well-fortified castle town and its population mainly engaged in agricultural activities. The vine was one of its main assets but its economy also opened up to crafts.
