The abbey of Preuilly is located in the commune of Égligny, in the department of Seine-et-Marne, 16 km north-east of Montereau-Fault-Yonne.
It was founded in 1118 north of the current village, by a fellow student of Saint Bernard and then became the fifth "daughter of Cîtaux" abbey.
Supported by Thibaut de Champagne, the monastery developed rapidly. Its abbey church was completed in 1205 and a few decades later, Preuilly in turn initiated the foundation of secondary abbeys.
The site was somewhat upset by the Hundred Years War, but the land and prosperity of Preuilly resisted the vicissitudes of turbulent times, including the Wars of Religion.
As early as 1535, despite the establishment of the commendation regime, which allowed priors or abbots to draw personal income from monastic work, the abbey even owned a house in Paris…
In the 17th century, the whole was divided into three lots and during the Revolution, the church and convent buildings were dismantled.
The demolitions were stopped and the complex partially rebuilt thanks to private owners during the 19th century.
Nowadays, the walls of the choir of the church are still visible in particular until the birth of the warheads, the side walls of the nave, the bases of the chapter house.
There are also agricultural buildings. Although part of the estate is exploited for its agricultural potential, the site, a private property listed in the Inventory, is the seat of a research center which is carrying out archaeological work under the direction of a specialist from the University of Brussels..
Open to the public during Heritage Days and the last Saturday in September for a pilgrimage and study "meetings".
