Lampertheim

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Bas-Rhin

Lampertheim is a commune in Bas-Rhin, in the Grand Est region, 13 km northwest of Strasbourg.

Its territory of 6.6 km² has retained a resolutely rural face despite the growth of the nearby Alsatian capital. Thus, arable land still covers 81% of the local area.

If traces of human occupation from the Neolithic period have been uncovered, the village as such is mentioned from the year 800 as a possession of the counts of Nordau. At the end of the 12th century, part of the current town fell under the Abbey of Honau.

Due in particular to the Thirty Years' War, the 17th century proved to be terrible for Lampertheim, who ended up burned down in 1678 by order of King Louis XIV. The village, now owned by the bishops of Strasbourg until the Revolution, is however recovering. Essentially agricultural, it even became residential from the interwar period, but it was at the end of the 20th century that demography "takes off". The town now has nearly 3,500 inhabitants. It has nevertheless been able to preserve an old center and half-timbered farms which make the village a real jewel of heritage typical of Alsace. With its verdant countryside and its fields dedicated to the cultivation of asparagus, that justifies a detour!

Things to see and do

Many half-timbered houses and farms dating from the 17th to the 19th century line a walk dedicated to heritage in the center of the town. Two of them are listed in the Inventory.

This is part of the farm at number 6 rue Pfettisheim. There remains the dwelling, dated 1802, with half-timbering and a square floor. There are beautiful molded sandpits on the exteriors and windows that have retained their original frames. The interior decor, including paneled ceilings, has also remained as it is. The barn that closed the courtyard was however dismantled.

On the other hand, at 18 rue de Mundolsheim is a farmhouse whose dwelling is dated 1683, as evidenced by a mention on the facade. The complex was enlarged in the 18th century (outbuildings, to the south) and in 1842 a barn was added. Place des Tilleuls, rue Principale, rue Leh, rue de l'Église or rue de Pfulgriesheim, buildings with traditional architecture are also to be seen, which makes the town a real little postcard...

To see again, on the religious level this time, the two Catholic and Protestant churches which were built during the German annexation, at the end of the 19th century. Before this period, the same church was used by the faithful of the two cults… The Protestant church dates from 1877. Of vast size, it has contemporary decorations. The twelve side windows are from 1951. Like the three windows in the choir dating from 1956, they represent Christ and biblical motifs. As for the nave, it houses sculptures by Robert Stephan.

The Saint-Arbogast Catholic Church was consecrated in 1885. Note that the porch-tower gives access to a nave of four bays which ends in a narrow five-sided apse. The porch, specifically, is decorated with small columns with neo-Romanesque capitals. The tower's flashing and corner chains are cut sandstone. In addition, the building houses objects and works classified as objects (paintings, statues, furniture).

This overview will end with the town hall, erected in 1896 and which does not lack nobility, as if to signify its important function… We thus notice its porch, the balcony of honor and the pinnacle… In the grand staircase, a painting by Léo Schnug (1878-1933), one of the most outstanding artists of Strasbourg at the turn of the century, has been visible for several years. Native of the village, he produced this oil on canvas in 1911 which represents a tournament of knights within the framework of the castle of Haut Koenigsbourg. The style evokes medieval miniatures. To be admired during the opening hours of the town hall. Information on +33 3 88 20 12 69.

As for culture again, activities (readings), workshops, shows and exhibitions are offered throughout the year at the library. Contact on +33 3 88 81 66 10.

For athletes, tennis courts are available, to be reserved with the local club. Contact +33 3 88 20 08 14.

Furthermore, on the initiative of the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg, a 9 km "VitaBoucle" route has been drawn and signposted in the town. It allows you to walk or run at your own pace by taking or skirting parks, gardens, riversides... Also to be mentioned are equally secure routes, on or near the locality, dedicated to walkers and two-wheelers: thus, a few hectometres to the east of the territory, the greenway that borders the Marne-Rhine canal is synonymous with beautiful walks to the south (Strasbourg) or north (forests).
