The Livry-Gargan museum is located in the town of the same name, in the department of Seine-Saint-Denis, about fifteen kilometers northeast of Paris.
It was created in 1979 inside the Château de la Forêt, a building built in the 19th century in Parc Lefèvre, named after the owner of the estate (known since the Middle Ages). The classical style castle (Louis XIII period), made of brick and cut stone, also included outbuildings and annexes (caretaker's accommodation, barns, winter gardens).
Once owned by the commune after the Second War, the whole (building and park) was remodeled: wings in the architectural style of the castle thus replaced the winter gardens.
In addition to a library, the museum presented a collection of documents and objects linked to the history of the city. Several pieces were also dedicated to the Marquise de Sévigné, niece of an abbot of Livry Abbey who was her guardian and who officiated at her wedding. She frequently stayed in Livry and mentioned it several times in her writings: "Everything there was cheerful, the air, the greenery and even the rain..."
Since a new restructuring, the old museum has become a cultural center where temporary exhibitions of visual arts (paintings, sculptures) and photographs, events and conferences are scheduled throughout the year, as well as thematic exhibitions on local history and heritage.
