Located about fifteen kilometers west of Fougères and near the A84 motorway that connects Caen to Rennes, the charming village of Saint-Brice-en-Coglès has been labeled Village Etape since 2007. Since 2012, it also has the label "Village in Poetry". Saint-Brice-en-Coglès also holds 2 clubs in the classification of Villages Fleuris.
Dynamic and rich in services, it brings together many shops (including several restaurants), a free service area for motorhomes and houses the Tourist Information Office (open all year).
The current parish of Saint-Brice-en-Coglès was called Puignac in 1050. In this village, missionaries had built a church in the name of Saint Brice, name of a bishop of Tours. The town is part of the Community of Commons Couesnon Marches of Brittany and formerly of the Pays du Coglais, formerly Gallo-Roman constituency. This granite country has a name of Breton origin. The main explanation relates the word Coglais to Breton Gougleiz, "Kleiz" meaning "north".
The seigneury of Saint-Brice-en-Coglès whose existence dates back to the 10th century belonged to the Barony of Fougères which was part of the nine Baronies of the Duchy of Brittany, which was very important because it defended the entry of the duchy to the Normans, to the French and the English. It seems that Raoul ll, Baron de Fougères, in fight with Henry ll of England married one of the daughters of the lord of Saint-Brice. The latter, thanks to its fortified castles of La Motte and Rocher-Portail, defended the steps of the Baronnie against the English settled in St. James.
At the beginning of the 20th century, several granite quarries made hundreds of people work there.
Since 1 January 2017, Saint-Brice-en-Coglès is included in the new town of Maen Roch ("Pierre" in Breton and Gallo) with the old neighboring town of Saint-Étienne-en-Coglès.
Many castles and manor houses are present on this territory, such as the Château de la Motte, the castle of Rocher-Portail, the castle of La Villette and the manor of the Branch, which form an exceptional heritage.
Nearly 200 km of hiking trails and 17 circuits allow you to discover the natural and cultural heritage of the canton. The various greenways allow secure access to the various villages while discovering many architectural buildings of high quality.
