Marle, a small town in the greater Laon area 25 km north-east of the center of Laon, the gateway to Thiérache, is established on a high plateau overlooking the valley crossed by two rivers: the Serre and the Vilpion.
The soil of Marlois is composed of white chalk (marl) on which extends a layer of yellow silt (diluvium) forming top quality arable soil.
Marle is served by the Laon-Hirson railway.
