Marly

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Moselle

Marly is a town of Moselle, in the Grand Est region, southwest of Metz which it borders.

The territory inhabited since the Neolithic and then during the Gallo-Roman era is the seat of a small seigneury that belongs to the Middle Ages to the Revolution in the counties of Verdun, Blâmont and Bar. It is the families of Metz who however reign daily on the village and its lands, also suitable for agriculture, on both sides of the Seille.

Marly does not yet have a thousand inhabitants at the Liberation. Its development began in the 1960s and 1970s with the Frescaty Air Force Base (now converted into a business park) located partly in the town and then with the development of subdivisions and residences welcoming a population enjoying the proximity of Metz.

Marly has now registered nearly 10,000 inhabitants, which has preserved its heritage and its living environment while offering a range of quality cultural and sports activities (golf, cultural space). Which justifies a detour for who stays in Lorraine.

Things to see and do

The town has a rich heritage that testifies to its easy past when the village near the capital of the Moselle was popular with notable Messin.

A walk in the form of a discovery can thus include the Bogenez castle, built in the Middle Ages and remodeled and modernized, which was the seat of the lords of Marly until the Revolution.

Built in 1845, Castle Chandellier was for its part bequeathed to the bishopric of Metz between the two wars. The site then became a school and a retirement home before being converted into housing.

Also worthy of note is the Château Ancillion de Jouy (late 18th century), still privately owned, and the Grange-aux-Ormes castle, whose ancient features date back to the 12th century. The building and its park are now part of the golf course in the town and the hotel complex which operates in parallel.

Lastly, there is the castle of De Cortembach (18th century), converted into housing, and the Château Lejaille (late 19th century) which now houses a music school and a theater.

See also at Marly, the church of Saint-Brice, completed in 1862, neo-Gothic style, long nicknamed the cathedral of the Seille, in reference to its imposing character.

If it is only visited during heritage days, Fort Saint-Privat, near the former military base, is worth a look. It was part of the first fortified belt forts Metz began by the French before 1870 and completed by the Prussians during the Annexation. At the beginning of the 20th century, the site welcomed airship units and then joined the developing air base. Reproduced in 1940 by the Germans, it allows them to resist the advance of the Allies in November 1944. Still owned by the Army, but disused, the fort houses frescoes evoking Mermoz and Saint-Exupéry.

Back in downtown, precisely, we will not forget the astonishing and moving monumental fresco on a facade of the rue de Metz, which features a Lancaster plane and its crew victims of a crash in 1944.

Finally, near the Town Hall, you can admire a replica of the monumental "Marianne" of the contemporary sculptor Paul Flikinger, inaugurated in 2010. The original work of the artist, who lives at Marly, is on display in the gardens from the Russian Embassy in Paris.

Always culturally, Marly has recently had a cultural space, the NEC, which programs shows and exhibitions of quality. Information on +33 3 87 63 23 38.
