The Terrier de Santans mansion is located in the town of Marnay, in the Haute-Saône department, 24 km northwest of Besançon.
This residence was built in the 16th century and is a fine example of Renaissance style in an urban environment and applied to civil architecture.
Commissioned by the noble family of Terrier de Santans, some members of which were parliamentarians in Besançon, the building has a large facade with two floors pierced by mullioned windows (the second resting on a long molded strip). Built in ocher limestone veined with blue extracted from quarries in the region, the residence has a semi-circular porch surmounted by a console table inspired by the temples of Antiquity.
We notice at the left corner of the street facade a projecting front building forming a covered passage on the ground floor. On the rear facade overlooking a courtyard, the corners also project.
After the Revolution, the private mansion was occupied for a long time by the gendarmerie. It was acquired by the municipality in 1977 which installed the town hall there. The arms of the Terrier des Santans family are, however, still visible...
Protected as historical monuments, partly open to the public, it is one of the jewels of this town of character bordering the valley of the 'Ognon and which owes its prosperity to the weaving industry that the Countess of Burgundy Jeanne II encouraged at the end of the Middle Ages.
