Small village of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Murat takes place in the department of Allier, in the arrondissement of Montluçon. Close to Commentry, the commune takes its name from a derivative of the Latin muratus, meaning "surrounded by walls".
Important city of the Middle Ages, Murat was at the time part of the Duchy of Bourbon and was one of the ducal châtellenies. On the edge of historic Aquitaine, the current village had the ambition to defend its province of origin.
Today, Murat is mainly a village with rural ambition, but it nevertheless has a rich architectural and historical heritage that attracts large numbers of visitors each year. Its glorious past is revealed especially through its castle, always visible, as well as by its religious buildings to be discovered all over the commune.
