Common on the banks of the Channel in the Pas-de-Calais, Neufchâtel-Hardelot takes place on the Côte d'Opale, about ten kilometers from Boulogne-sur-Mer. Located in the heart of the Regional Natural Park of Opal Caps and Marshes, it is located forty kilometers from Calais, just two and a half hours drive from Paris, London or Brussels.
The city takes its name in 1954, after merging with its seaside resort on the banks of the Channel. Its central location has earned the municipality a great importance over the centuries, and it has gradually taken the face that we know today. However, we must wait until the middle of the twentieth century to know its most serious growth, especially under the impetus of John Whitley, a rich English patron who initiated the development of the seaside resort Hardelot-plage.
Even today, Neufchâtel-Hardelot attracts by the charm of its heritage and its pleasant beaches.
Property of the commune of Condette, the Château d'Hardelot is a former 12th century fortified castle transformed into a neo Tudor manor during the 19th century. Polygonal in shape with nine towers, it is surrounded by two ditches and takes place on a hill overlooking the lake of mirrors. Close to the seaside resort, it is also in the heart of the Marais de Condette regional nature reserve. Bought in 1897 by John Whitley, the founder of Hardelot-plage, it then became a mecca for leisure and culture in the region. At the end of the 1970s, it notably served as a filming location for the film Tess by Roman Polanski. Entirely renovated, it now houses the cultural center of the Entente cordiale, offering a cultural program focused on British culture. Inside, it is possible to admire works from the Louvre museums in Boulogne-sur-Mer and Saint-Omer, as well as items on loan from the Mobilier national. Tudor-inspired gardens have been recreated outdoors, and it is now possible to discover an Elizabethan theater made entirely of wood.
