Castle of La Tournelle

Monument in Paris

The castle of Tournelle was built under the reign of Charles VI (1380-1422), at Paris, along the Seine, at the quai de la Tournelle, in the 5th arrondissement.

It replaced the Saint-Bernard tower which was part of the fortified wall of the capital managed by Philippe Auguste at the beginning of the 13th century.

Bastide or big tower with turnstiles (hence its name), the castle was restored in the sixteenth century, having however lost its strategic interest. He became under Louis XIII, at the request of Saint Vincent de Paul, place of detention galériens pending transfer to Marseille. Although very precarious, the living conditions of the detainees seemed less terrible than at the Conciergerie. At that time, the population nicknamed the castle of Tournelle "tower Galerians".

The castle was demolished in 1792 at the request of the National Assembly.

There is no vestige of it, except the name of the wharf where it once stood.
