Pavilion of the Roi

Monument in Paris

The Pavillon du Roi is a mansion located at number 1 Place des Vosges, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris.

The location of the building is highly symbolic. It occupies the central part of the "south" side of the square, the exact opposite of the Queen's Pavilion, and the equestrian statue of Louis XIII, in the center, faces him.

On the ground floor, a passage allows to reach the Rue de Rague.

The King's Pavilion was built from 1605 to 1608 during the creation of the square and if the sovereign never occupied it, it was intended to serve as the main access to this new royal square.

Model of 35 other pavilions, it was designed by the architect Louis Métezeau who drew the plans for the future Place des Vosges. First inhabited by a first valet of the court, he was later occupied by the lord of Plessis and then bought in 1751 by Jeanne Gourgue. Other owners follow one another until Joseph de Bonneval in 1769. The building is seized at the Revolution and sold as national property.

The King's Pavilion, partly classified in 1956 (for its exterior elements) is still privately owned. The places can not be visited. This building of character can however be observed during a free visit or commented on the Place des Vosges in the heart of a historic district of Paris. Information on +33 1 49 52 42 63.
