The Pont-Long racecourse, at Pau, was inaugurated in 1842, built on land conceded by the city to a racing company.
At the time, besides the tradition of local breeding, the installation of many British nationals in the region promotes the equestrian sector as a whole and the organization of events in particular.
Wooden stands were built in 1863, soon replaced by stone stands in 1876.
In its current configuration, the racecourse of Pau covers 40 hectares and has several tracks in sand or lawn adapted to the different specialties of racing (galloping, trotting, hurdles, steeple-chase...). In addition, a total of 110 boxes can accommodate a large number of horses for competitions and training.
Some 20 meetings leading to betting are organized annually.
The modernized grandstand accommodates 2500 spectators, and restaurants and meeting rooms have been set up. The site can be rented by companies to organize events (seminars, exhibitions) or even private individuals for family reunions.
Outside race days, the racecourse is regularly open to the public to visit the different areas (stands, stables etc), and thus discover behind the scenes of this vast set dedicated to the horse.
