The name comes from Saint Denis, who was born in Italy, where he was ordained priest and bishop. "Mere" comes from the Latin Mercatum meaning "market". The story goes that the lord of Saint-Denis Radulph had a right to fair, which took place the day we celebrated the saint. He had played and lost against the fair lord de Beaumanoir to Montilly-sur-Noireau. Every year a fair is held in Montilly-sur-Noireau the feast of St. Denis on October 9. Residents are Mérois.
