Saint-Georges-d'Oléron

Historical Monument since 1931, the Romanesque church of Saint-Georges-d'Oléron is one of the most remarkable monuments of the island. The early church (the current nave), strengthened against invasions, dates from the eleventh century. The nave ended in the thirteenth century, Eleanor of Aquitaine brought church Donate to Abbaye aux Dames of Saintes which completed the work. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the monument, a victim of religious wars, found himself robbed and mutilated several times. Requisitioned during the revolution, the church, which served the same barn, was made for worship in 1800. A major restoration in 1968 then started.

In the village center, enthroned superb market halls dating from 1864. On the square, beautiful mansions of the late nineteenth century attest the trade at that time prosperity.
