Saint-Thibault-des-Vignes is a town of Seine-et-Marne, in the Ile-de-France, 30 km east of Paris and northeast of Torcy which it borders.
If the town was officially founded in the Revolution, its origin is much older, when implanted were a church and a priory in the eleventh century to preserve the relics of Saint-Thibault de Provins, brought from Italy after his canonization by his brother, Fr. Arnold Abbey Lagny.
Shrine, is the parish until the XIXth also famous for its vines planted on the slopes of the northern slopes of the banks of the Marne.
Simple village until the 1990s, Saint-Thibault-des-Vignes sees his face upset and demographics doped to the creation of the new town of Marne-la-Vallée. This is not an administrative body but includes dozens of towns as part of a development plan and urban development.
Although modest in size (4.8 km²), the Saint-Thibault's territory is affected, its population now reaching about 6500 inhabitants. However, in addition to its heritage, the town has preserved the historic village level rural landscape. Between modernity and medieval past, the town has no shortage of character and strengths.
The church pre-Romanesque Saint-Thibault (also dedicated to St. John the Baptist), originally from the resort, is still obviously the heritage jewel of the city.
While built in the forest, it dates from the late eleventh century. From large scale for pilgrims wishing to pray before the relics, then it measured 32 meters long and 50 wide. The building was redesigned and reduced in the eighteenth, and with a new facade. Its called historiated were fortunately preserved: they represent Biblical scenes like the raising of Lazarus, the temptation of Adam and Eve (a snake coiled in a tree with a bunch Eve), Eve sat nursing Cain, or the martyrs St. Lawrence and St. Vincent. According to experts, the bill for these capitals resembles that of capitals and ornamentation of the ancient church of Sainte-Geneviève in Paris.
Ranked, the building is open to visitors on Saturday from 10am to 12pm, and during services at Heritage Days.
It can be pleasant then to discover the old town, remained as before the creation of the new city.
The town hall-school 1880s, the remains of the ancient priory (converted farm before the Revolution and rebuilt in the nineteenth small castle), the Engrand park, the old well reputed miraculous which justified the location of the priory, after healing were observed during the transfer of the relics in the eleventh century, and mark a pleasant walk.
Pathways may also include the area around the castle Rentilly the south, with its park (in the neighboring commune of Bussy-Saint-Georges) or the banks of the Gondoire which flows into the Marne after crossing the territory of Saint- Thibault.
More recent, the district of Sablons and equipment appeared in the plain during the creation of Marne-la-Vallée also warrant a visit. And of course the same edge of the Marne to the north, which are the municipal boundary.
