Fourth city of the Landes and important industrial port, Tarnos takes place at the mouth of the Adour, near the Basque Country. It is located on the edge of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, not far from Bayonne, Capbreton, Biarritz and the Atlantic coasts.

If we know quite badly the origins of Tarnos, we know however that the city was already present in the Gallo-Roman era under the name of Tarinus. Occupied in the twelfth century by the order of Saint John of Jerusalem, the city was particularly a place of passage for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela who took the path of the coast. The appearance of the railway in the 19th century and the improvement of maritime services at the same time enabled Tarnos to develop, particularly with the creation of a steel plant.

Always very active economically, the town is also appreciated by tourists thanks to the charm of its landscapes and its architectural heritage.

Things to see and do

Listed as a Historical Monument, the Notre-Dame des Forges church was built at the end of the 19th century in the district of the workers, foremen and engineers of the forges of Adour. Closed to worship since the late 1990s, it has a nave and two collaterals with five spans surmounted by a metal frame.

While walking in the city, you will also be able to discover the church Saint-Vincent-Deacon, Romanesque building with a very beautiful fresco in the choir, or the dyke protecting the mouth of the Adour.

Tarnos has two beautiful beaches, that of the Metro and that of the Dike, where it is possible to enjoy the sun for relaxation or to learn about various water activities. These are monitored during the summer season.

Lovers of outdoor sports and hiking will be seduced by all the natural heritage of the city, and can browse the Landes forest or go around the lake. Bike paths and hiking trails are also available.
