Fourth city of the Landes and important industrial port, Tarnos takes place at the mouth of the Adour, near the Basque Country. It is located on the edge of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, not far from Bayonne, Capbreton, Biarritz and the Atlantic coasts.
If we know quite badly the origins of Tarnos, we know however that the city was already present in the Gallo-Roman era under the name of Tarinus. Occupied in the twelfth century by the order of Saint John of Jerusalem, the city was particularly a place of passage for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela who took the path of the coast. The appearance of the railway in the 19th century and the improvement of maritime services at the same time enabled Tarnos to develop, particularly with the creation of a steel plant.
Always very active economically, the town is also appreciated by tourists thanks to the charm of its landscapes and its architectural heritage.
