Coulee:
Couhé is located southwest of the Vienne department, 30 km from Poitiers, 45 km from Futuroscope, near the Deux-Sèvres and the Charente, on the doorstep of Poitou.
Its history: Origin of the current name, the Latin toponym Colnacio derives perhaps from the name of a landowner. From the 11th to the 14th century, Cohec, Coec, and sometimes Coyhet and Couhé were written around the middle of the 14th century.
The addition "Vérac" appears in the seventeenth century, when the old barony becomes Marquisat.
Most of the houses were built of timber, half-timbered, and had the first floor overhanging.
Located on the Paris-Bordeaux road, this small town took on importance during the organization of the Post Office by Louis XI in 1742 and 1743.
The accommodation of travelers was the main industry in the nineteenth century, there were up to 40 inns...
Its monuments loaded with a rich history are all visible: the Lusignan castle built in 1020 (today private college), its halls of 1580, its medieval house of the 15th century, its church, its 13th century Valence abbey, its narrow streets with evocative names...
Its traditions: Couhé was made famous by its fair of May 1st under the halls, where are found craftsmen, farmers, cheese makers, bakers...
Gastronomy: stuffed poitevin, crushed Poitou, lumas (snails), cheese cake, Chabichou (goat cheese).
