With a territory occupied 40% by forests, Viroflay is among the most forested suburbs of Paris. Bordered by the Fausses-Reposes massif and the forest of Meudon, the town is also one of the steepest with trees culminating at 200 meters above sea level. This is quite exceptional in the near Paris. The origin of its name, the commune derives from a Gallo-Roman villa settled in the places long before the seigneuries. Until 1839, Viroflay is a prosperous village living mainly from cereal and grape crops. Then the arrival of the railway disrupts the local economy and the economic life is oriented towards the satisfaction of the needs of the Parisians. Livestock, vegetable growing and laundry become the main activities. The "monstrous" becomes his specialty. It is actually a variety of spinach with broad leaves. The Parisians, charmed by the peaceful and verdant place, soon came to Viroflay to settle there their country house.
