The Berlioz Festival is a major symphonic and Romantic music festival, one of the biggest gatherings in classical music. It takes place every year in late August in La Côte-Saint-André, the birthplace of Hector Berlioz. For a fortnight, around 50 events are held and over 1,000 artists are invited. Around 20,000 spectators come to hear the major works of the Romantic repertoire, most of which are played in the courtyard of Louis XI Castle, which is specially rearranged for this purpose. There are also recitals, chamber music, contemporary creations and minstrels in the medieval hall, the Berlioz farm and the churches of the neighbouring communes.
