Typically Basque, this traditional speciality from the Labourd province originated in the 17th century and is a round, golden cake which is both soft and crunchy, topped with pastry cream or black cherry jam. Of course, this treat is on offer at many cake shops and restaurants in the Basque Country!

An unmissable event for gourmets, the Basque Cake Festival, held in early October in Cambo-les-Bains, has a competition for the best amateur Basque cake, a brotherhoods' parade, cake-making workshop, gourmet walk, concerts and sale of Basque cakes.

In Sare, a museum dedicated to the Basque cake chronicles the history of this famous cake through the ages, and the various stages of the cake-making process.
