A trademark culinary speciality of Brittany, kouign-amann is a dessert from the town of Douarnenez. They say that this cake was invented in 1860 by a baker in the town, Yves-René Scordia.
Kouign-amann, whose name means cake and butter in Breton, consists of a bread dough that is covered in a butter-sugar mixture and folded into layers. After baking, the result is a dessert with a soft texture inside and a crispy, caramelised outside. While it's all very high in calories, it's nonetheless delicious!
This Breton cake, very popular served with a glass of cider, has today won over the whole world, from the United States to Japan. To protect their original recipe, the bakers of Douarnenez have even created the Association of ArtisanKouign-Amann-makers(Association des Artisans Fabriquant le Kouign-Amann) in Douarnenez, a guarantee of high quality.
Today, this dessert comes in different flavours, such as chocolate, apple, rum or red fruits.
