Heritage tour - city of Pont Audemer 27500 Normandy

Depart from the town of Pont-Audemer, latitude 49.3551900 (N 49° 21’ 19”), longitude 0.5163600 (E 0° 30’ 59”)

The tourist office, located on the Place du General de Gaulle, is located in the former George Sand School. This square, recently renovated, is an extension of the old ramparts that protected the city.
Now head for rue des Carmes. The Costil tannery pits, for washing the skins, were in place of the supermarket.
Next to the post office is the Salle des Carmes. At this place, there was once the Carmelite convent. To continue your walk, go in the street of the Republic towards the town hall. At the museum Canel, cross the street and discover a little further the passage to No. 87. It leads you to one of the canals that crisscross the city. Join the quay Robert Leblanc then, take the bridge of the fishmonger, Here stands the media library near which was located a fishmonger (with metal architecture - XIX-XXth centuries) and the jail (one of the old prisons of the city). To continue your ride, take the François Mitterrand wharf, whose promenade has been refurbished, then cross the Risle by the bridge of the Madeleine to direct you to the Quai Felix Faure.

Not far from there was a salt loft. To continue your discovery of the city, follow the Risle in
following the Robert Leblanc quay (founder of the Surcouf maquis, a local resistance movement during the Second World War), turn right and take rue Sadi Carnot. You will see the panel n ° 3.

This street is famous for the architecture of its mansions and for the courtyards they house.
In passing, do not miss the street Paul Clémencin (local resistance shot in the Second World War) which was once called the street pastry chefs. This pedestrian street with its small stone bridge over the canal and its latrines, its old signs, is typical of the Middle Ages. By pursuing
your way street Sadi Carnot, you will discover the panel n ° 4.

Take a detour through the city's street in the significant name since it represented the heart of the city in the Middle Ages. In this street stood the cheese market. Then, retrace your steps and resume the course of your visit. The street Sadi Carnot opens on the place Louis Gillain (resistant lawyer stopped July 14, 1944 and shot) where the panel n ° 5 awaits you.

Exit this square by successively taking rue des Cordeliers then Notre Dame Street.
Pre to discover the building on your left in stone and flint (former home of Louis
Gillain, built in the 30s in neoclassical style) and the traditional Norman house on your right. In this street stood the poultry market and stood the church of the Holy Sepulcher now disappeared.
Turn left: in front of you stands the building "Les Galets" located on the Boulevard Pasteur (formerly "maritime boulevard" because it led to the port). In front of this construction, you will find the panel n ° 6.

Continue your journey and take rue du Général Leclerc (next to the "Le Royal" cinema), then rue des petits moulins. The name of this street comes from the mills which were implanted and from a stream, today channeled and underground, which went along it.
Then turn left taking the impasse Pot d'Etain which will lead you to the place of the same name (probably pulling it from a hostel there).
Formerly, this square was one of the fortified gates of Pont-Audemer and there stood the cow market. It is here that you will notice the panel n ° 7.

Exit from this place by taking the rue Gambetta (former sheep street) or the rue des
Carmelites (from the name of the convent that was transformed after the revolution into a court and prison). You will arrive on "Place Victor Hugo". (panel 8).

To continue your stroll, go up rue Thiers (formerly called "rue du commerce" in the 18th and 19th centuries and "street between two bridges" to a more remote time). On the bridge, right near
from the old restored Spring signboard, see the bow window and at the bottom right an old
skin dryer. Look now on the other side of the bridge and cross: Panel 9 is waiting for you...

Take your way again, you get to Rue de la Republique (formerly known as Grande Rue). This is the main street of Pont-Audemer. Above the passage in front of the church, admire
The fresco, which is a reproduction of Alfredo Echazaretta's work, symbolizing the city's industrial past. Take this passage and turn back.
Go up the rue de la République to discover the sign relating to the church. The latter is opposite Aristide Briand Street. Be attentive to the construction and materials making up the church: the nave is
stone but at the top of the latter, there are half-timberings...

Continue your walk leaving the Rue de la République and head towards the church then turn right following the impasse Saint Ouen or the street of the Sword. These streets will allow you to discover a district of the city with a medieval look.
Go up Aristide Briand street, it will take you to the Place Charles de Gaulle. Cross this place:
In front of you stands the shine, the auditorium and the panel n ° 12.

Then take the wharf of the Grise Tower (name of a tower of the old fortification of the city whose vestiges are still visible nowadays, it is located just in front of the dovecote which borders the Risle). Head to the Canel Museum to see on your right, sign no. 13 "The Canel Museum".

Finally, take the court Canel and its passage that will take you again on the street of the Republic then, turn right across the Risle on the bridge of Rouen. You will see the panel # 14, "The story of Pont-Audemer".

At the end of this walk, do not miss to visit the Alfred Canel museum and the Saint Ouen church, rue de la République.
