Carlat Rock, a former basalt flow, is where the most important fortress in Haute-Auvergne once stood. The headquarters of the Carladès viscounty, the castle fort was destroyed in 1604 on the orders of King Henry IV but a few ruins still remain. Queen Margot famously stayed there during her exile in Auvergne.
Nowadays owned by the Principality of Monaco, the rock standing 40 metres tall is known not only for its climbing site, but also for its stunning views. Carved into the rock, the Queen's steps will lead you to the top, where you can enjoy superb views over the Mounts of Cantal!
The rock of Carlat once bore an immense fortress, reputed to be "the most formidable citadel of all the south of France".
In the fifteenth century, Jacques d'Armagnac and his wife Louise d'Anjou made him reach its greatest splendor. In the sixteenth century, Marguerite de Valois (Queen Margot) took refuge there and left an unforgettable memory throughout Carladès. In 1603/1604, Henri IV had it demolished, so that today only tiny traces of this majestic construction remain.
Four centuries later, with the agreement of the owner His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, the CABA rebuilt this stronghold... in realities virtual and augmented! Enter the fortress of 1476. Under the reign of Jacques d'Armagnac, Viscount of Carlat and Duke of Nemours, it reaches its peak... but is besieged on the orders of King Louis XI, the duke having equivocal links with various rebels and plotters!
At the top of the rock, plunge into the heart of history using new technologies. Throughout the course, screens, augmented reality headsets and even your smartphone allow you to visualize buildings reconstituted in 3D.
