Notre-Dame de Jouarre abbey, founded in the 7th century, is still occupied by a community of Benedictine nuns. The abbey is a listed historic monument and partly open to the public: visitors can look around the abbey church, rebuilt in the 19th century, the 11th-century Romanesque tower (a vestige of the original abbey church) and the Merovingian crypts of St Paul and St Ébrégésile. These remarkably well-preserved ancient crypts contain the tombs of the abbey's founders decorated with magnificent bas-reliefs.
Jouarre tower houses a permanent exhibition about the history and life of the abbey and a display of crafts made by the nuns.
