In Paris' 11th arrondissement, not far from the Gare de l'Est and Gare du Nord stations, Oberkampf is a young, dynamic district that's popular with partygoers and is surely one of the capital's liveliest areas. From the Bataclan to the Ménilmontant Metro station, hip bars, restaurants and nightclubs line Rue Oberkampf to the delight of Parisian night owls, who flock there in the evening. While there are many concert venues, with the Nouveau Casino and the Bataclan, there's also no shortage of art galleries, for culture has its place here too.

The Oberkampf district, accessible by Metro via the station of the same name, also includes one of the most famous buildings in the capital, the Paris Winter Circus (Cirque d'Hiver de Paris), built in 1852. Every winter, this listed Historic Monument hosts famous traditional circus shows. Not far from Rue Oberkampf, on Rue Crespin du Gast, stands the little Édith Piaf Museum. Based in an apartment in the district of Ménilmontant, where the singer lived for a while, you can see personal objects and other memorabilia relating to the famous singer of La Vie en Rose.

The Popincourt market is very well-stocked with fresh produce and takes place in the district every Tuesday and Friday morning, between Rues Oberkampf and Jean-Pierre Timbaud.
