The Val d'Oise Departmental Fire Brigade Museum

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Val-d'Oise

In 1999, the Val-d'Oise Departmental Fire Brigade Museum was established in the former stables of the Château de Grouchy. Covering 1,200 m², this exhibition tells the story of firefighting from the 18th century to the present day.

A themed trail invites you to discover firefighters' equipment and learn about their traditions, beliefs and duties through the ages. In the vast hall, vehicles, hand pumps, uniforms, helmets, motor-driven pumps and other equipment collected over 30 years by enthusiasts illustrate the history of the profession. You'll learn why fire engines are red, and the origin of the French term for being a heavy smoker, "fumer comme un pompier" (literally meaning "to smoke like a fireman")!

A room for children has a lovely collection of toys for them to discover, the oldest of which date back to the 19th century. Throughout the visit, information is provided to teach young people about the dangers of fire.
