Charming town of Gard, in the Occitanie region, Aigues-Vives takes place about thirty kilometers from Nîmes and its famous arenas. It takes place in Vaunage, not far from Gallarges-le-Montueux, Calvisson and Congénies.
Created in the Gallo-Roman era on the road leading to the Ambrussium bridge, the town of Aigues-Vives was ravaged by the Saracens in the 8th century, forcing the inhabitants to rebuild their town near the source of a fountain of white water which gave it its name.
Today, this city in southwestern France continues to attract passing visitors through the incredible wealth of its archaeological heritage which bears witness to a glorious and very ancient past.
While strolling in the town of Aigues-Vives, and more particularly at the place called Pataran Cemetery, you will be able to discover many archaeological remains from the High Empire, Low Empire, High Middle Ages and Middle Ages today classified as Historical Monuments. In particular, it is possible to admire the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa and its thermal baths.
Do not miss to discover the military terminal dating from Antiquity, the cast iron fountain nicknamed La Griffe or the monument of Emile Jamais.
The town is also home to several winegrowers' houses with beautiful portals, as well as the birthplace of Gaston Doumergue, former President of the French Republic. Labeled Maison des Illustres, it has undergone extensive restoration.
The 17th century temple is also worth a detour. First a Catholic Church, it became the Temple of Reason at the beginning of the 19th century before now hosting exhibitions and concerts organized by the municipality.
During your hikes on the marked trails of the town, let yourself be seduced by the mazets, capitelles and other low walls that line your route, before discovering the 19th century Saint-Pierre church, an elegant building in neo-gothic style.
To take advantage of sunny days, head to the public garden with its pleasure garden and rockery, or the Garrigouille district, a former limestone mining area.
From late June to early July, the votive festival offers its program of festivities including a manade and an abrivado.
A fireworks display is organized in mid-July on the occasion of the national holiday.
In July, it's time for the short film festival in the village arenas.
A classical music festival is organized every year in August.
