Allerey Castle is located in the town of Allerey-sur-Saône in the department of Saône-et-Loire, 20 km northeast of Chalon-sur-Saône.
A fortress sitting on a castle mound is mentioned from the 13th century, dominating the course of the Saône.
Several nobles succeeded each other as masters and lords of the place: Hugues de Mailly (14th century), Jean de Lugny (15th century). The site was however set on fire by Croatian troops in 1636. Rebuilt in a classical style in the 18th century by Espiard-Humbert, it was looted during the Revolution before benefiting from alterations in the decades that followed.
Nowadays, accessible at the end of an alley lined with trees which hide the outbuildings, the castle consists of a rectangular main building framed by wings which extend its facade, themselves flanked by pavilions. A central avant-corps surmounted by a triangular pediment decorated with coats of arms is visible in the center of the facade. The distribution of the interior rooms has remained consistent with the 17th century plan, but the woodwork and decorations date from the 19th century.
The complex includes a park and outbuildings.
