The castle museum, in Annecy, was built in the castle built in the 11th century on a promontory overlooking the city and the road connecting Geneva to Italy.
First castle, it is reworked by the Counts of Geneva and especially the Dukes of Savoy who reside there for several centuries.
Protected as historical monuments since 1959, it is now composed of different buildings around a courtyard: a dungeon of the twelfth century, towers to the north, and an "old house" framed by a "new home" and a house called Perrière of the sixteenth century.
First defensive, the castle has changed over time into noble residence and comfortable, covering several styles, including the Renaissance in the sixteenth.
The princes and lords abandon the site in the seventeenth century, which is then transformed into barracks, a vocation that he maintained until 1947.
The city of Annecy bought it and built a museum which opened in 1956.
In an exceptional historical and architectural setting, the property presents collections related to regional heritage, lake archeology, medieval sculpture, landscape paintings, contemporary art and animation.
