Things to see and do

Classified as Historic Monuments, the Saint-Pierre church dates back to the 10th century. Priory until the French Revolution, it presents a very beautiful Roman choir. The present building dates from the 12th century and has a reconstructed nave in the first half of the 19th century. Set on the banks of the River Vienne, it features modern plaster statues, baptismal fonts and a nineteenth century font. Stained-glass windows also deserve special attention. It is also possible to discover the monastery of St. Joseph, a community of Augustinian sisters built in the middle of the seventeenth century.

The commune of Bonneuil-Matours hosts two castles registered with the Historical Monuments. The first, that of Cremault, is for its courtyard and gate, while the second, that of Mariéville, is distinguished by its fountain and its portal.

The Maurice Fombeure Museum retraces the life of this poet-writer from the region and winner of the Grand Prix of poetry of the city of Paris in 1958.

Be sure to admire the suspension bridge built in the middle of the 19th century. Rebuilt in the early 1930s, it is the second bridge in the world to use the technique of twisting alternating twist cables.

But Bonneuil-Matours is also appreciated for its natural heritage, the municipality possessing no less than eight natural areas of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest. Let yourself be tempted by a walk in the forest of Moulière or in the wood of La Foye. Several rare species of birds have been spotted in these sites.
