Charming town of Charente-Maritime, on the Côte de Beauté, Breuillet takes place in the heart of the peninsula of Arvert, in Royannais. It is located seventy kilometers from the very touristy town of La Rochelle, not far from Royan, Chaillevette or Saint-Palais-sur-Mer.

Occupied since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the traces of human occupation found on site, the territory of Breuillet developed mainly in the Middle Ages, despite the ravages of the first Viking invasions. Known in particular for its salt production activity, the town was modernized in the 19th century, in particular with the sanitation of the marshes.

Today, Breuillet is a seaside resort appreciated for its calm and the charm of its architecture.

Things to see and do

Considered one of the jewels of Breuillet, the Saint-Vivien church is a fine example of Saintonge Romanesque art. Mentioned from the 12th century, it experienced significant destruction during the Hundred Years War which required reconstruction. Close to the architecture of the Notre-Dame d'Echillais church, the current Saint-Vivien church notably has a triumphal arch facade inspired by the antique style. Listed as a Historic Monument, it also reveals a simple interior with a nave of four bays and a choir revealing traces of naive frescoes from the 17th century.

As you walk through the city, you can also admire the neo-classical Protestant temple erected in the 19th century, or the 17th-century Taupignac dwelling and the 18th-century Chalézac dwelling.
