Located in the heart of the Gironde, the castle of Budos is a 14th century building built for Raymond Guilhem de Budos, nephew of Pope Clement V. Both a fortress and a palace, it reveals an enclosure with an architecture very similar to that of the pontifical castle of Villandraut.
Listed in the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments, the site was sold as national property under the French Revolution before being used as a quarry, this which explains its current state of ruins. The subject of major restoration and preservation campaigns, it still allows visitors to discover the enclosure with its corner towers and the lodgings made up of three main wings. The south-eastern curtain wall also has a very beautiful gate tower with a crenellated parapet and machicolations.
