Dardilly is a hilly town renowned for its pleasant lifestyle in the countryside in the northwest of the city of Lyon in the Rhone department.

The town has a rich and ancient history. Dardilly name is mentioned for the first time at the end of the tenth century. Its Gallo-Roman origins, it remains only the remains of the aqueduct Brévenne, built by the Emperor Claudius in the middle of the first century AD. During the Middle Ages, the parish is mentioned for the first time in 1133, in an act of restitution Bérard, Macon bishop in the church of Ainay. John Vianney, illustrious character of the town also known as the Curé of Ars, grows Dardilly at the time of the French Revolution.

Things to see and do

Among the best places to discover Dardilly include churches St. John Vianney and the Village of St. Claude Barriot. In the nineteenth century, the St. Pancras church became too small for its growing population. Revived the rivalry between the top of the village neighborhoods and those at the bottom will result in the construction of these two churches.

The village church is a building of Romanesque Revival style built of stone: gneiss and sandstone from the old ramparts, yellow or white limestone and Cruas size stones carved elements and portal. It has three naves and transept. We distinguish the baptistery dating from 1600, in which the Curé of Ars was baptized in 1786.

The church of Saint-Claude Barriot is built to the same period as the village church in the nineteenth century. Romanesque Revival style also, it also has three naves, but no transept. The organ in this church built in 1984 by Grenzig offers exceptional acoustics this church.

Take time to visit the birthplace of the Cure of Ars located near the village church, converted into a museum in 1962. This simple home has been preserved as it was at the time.

Walking through the village, one can admire the private chapel of the Sacred Heart of neo-Gothic style or the former rectory of the town.

Private houses of the eighteenth century are also part of the cultural heritage of the town: the Crépillère and beautiful laundrette, the Weaver, home of Paillet or the castle of Villedieu.

Parsonge Manor is a country home built in the late sixteenth century and sold to the municipality of Dardilly in the late twentieth century. It has a fountain, Fountain Parsonge face up to the entrance of the mansion.

Dardilly enjoys an ideal location surrounded by nature, with 173 hectares of forest, 500 hectares of natural areas and 646 hectares of agricultural areas. The theme all public trail Serres wood, located mainly on Dardilly, to discover the hundreds of species of birds, 15 species of amphibians and reptiles and 14 species of mammals sheltered by this natural area.

Chantemerle The valley offers a ride of 2.5 km dedicated to good walkers in the footsteps of Jean-Marie Vianney. You will find in particular the oratory of Chantemerle, place for meditation and contemplation.

Events and festivities

The town of Dardilly has its own market, which is held every Friday evening around the Saint-Claude church, in the neighborhood of Barriot. Within this bustling food market, you will find fruits and vegetables, poultry, the farmer sausage, wine, flowers and many other local products.

In February, the town organizes the children's carnival.

During the months of May and June, there is the baroque music festival the "Baroque Fridays" at St. Claude Barriot the church.

June 21, Dardilly celebrates music in all its forms during the music festival.

During the summer, Dardilly organizes the "Festive Fridays" special evenings with various activities dedicated to the whole family.

Heritage Days in September allow everyone to visit many heritage features of Dardilly as the fort of Paillet.

On December 8, the Feast of Lights of Lyon known worldwide, is also celebrated in Dardilly. As foretaste of Christmas, between contemplation and animations, the festivities on December 8 are to discover and share with family.
