Grivesnes

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Somme

Grivesnes Grivenum or just for some of "thrush", a bird or other of "stoneware" stone found in the basement of this region.

Located on a plateau 113 meters above sea level, this village looks all around. Since time immemorial have always chosen the former high points for reassurance and feel to master critical situations.

In April 1918 the village was the scene of a fierce battle, up to melee with the bayonet. This resistance allowed the French and British troops cut the road from Amiens to German troops.

Things to see and do

The fighting has been right in the eastern part of the 18th century castle, and thousands of artillery impacts are visible on the walls. Only the main building with brick wall ties, harps, and pediment dormers high stone in the 19th century has been restored.

The general impression of the church Grivesnes is a massive building that appears in its forms by the use of simple volumes and geometric (cubes, ovals, cylinders) and the influence of the East with the presence an imposing dome: a mixture of genres and eras, a true architectural wonder. Built from 1835 to 1842 by the artisans of the village, both of the Viscount of Gabriel Antoine Louis Myre: Orientalist reflect the taste of the time and a trip to Turkey he had done.

The dome has an area of 246 square meters, a height of 30 meters and a diameter of 12 meters 50. The dome is surrounded by a platform with bodyguard iron. It was rebuilt, following the damage of 1918, reinforced concrete covered with aluminum foil which gives it a shiny effect.
