La Mure

Several buildings are to see the downtown La Mure: the imposing City Hall, built 120 years ago, the clock tower, the old market, the Caral house that houses the museum Matheysin. It has many rooms devoted to the history and traditional activities of the Dauphiné. The museum also has a room dedicated to famous contemporary music composer, Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992), who spent part of his life on the plateau where Matheysin nature was for him a powerful source of inspiration. Matheysin The museum also offers a contemporary art wing with spaces adapted to the works of Claude Garanjoud (1926-2005). Following a major donation of his widow in the city of La Mure, some 385 works, some twenty paintings depicting 50 years of work of this original artist Muroise are presented permanently to the public: meticulous figurative drawings to very large abstract formats.

La Mure is also the city of Saint Peter Julian Eymard (1811-1868). This man born in La Mure at 69 rue du Breuil was ordained a priest of the diocese of Grenoble. He founded two congregations including still radiate today worldwide. Eminent apostle of the Eucharist, Peter Julian Eymard was canonized in 1962 by Pope John XXIII. For the bicentenary of his birth, February 4, 2011, the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament inaugurated in La Mure, on the ground floor of the house where the saint, the museum of Father Eymard.
