Located in the heart of the Marennes-Oléron basin, Marennes is known and recognized for the quality of its oysters. It is also a vibrant urban center with multiple activities and an important administrative center.
The city is made up of ten urban neighborhoods articulated around the city center. Shipowners and traders have left some beautiful traces of their opulence since the sixteenth century in the form of mansions, noble houses and bourgeois, there are many doors and stair towers visible at street corners. A major road junction, Marennes also has a significant tourist attraction with, among others, the City of the oyster or Marennes-plage. The city of the oyster, along the channel of Cayenne, explains oyster farming and refining (specialty of the Marennes-Oléron basin) in a fun and interactive way. As for Marennes-Plage, facing the island of Oléron, its water reservoir makes it an ideal place for swimming the smallest (and largest) in complete safety. Very lively city center, there are many shops around the pedestrian area as well as superb recently restored halls.
Located 7 km north of Marennes in the marsh, Hiers-Brouage is composed of two villages, that of Hiers and Brouage, gathered in 1825. Located in the middle of more than 3,000 hectares of marshes, this town offers a exceptional environment and a leading heritage. Between its marsh, its stronghold of the sixteenth century, its priory and its walled fountain, monuments to visit are numerous. Do not miss the visits organized by the Tourist Office.
Hiers-Brouage is a must for heritage lovers. The ramparts of its citadel, the iconic watchtowers, stand in the middle of marshes offering an incredible diversity of fauna and flora. Many hiking trails allow visitors to discover the turn of a path: herons, egrets and other swans. In the spring, you can see storks nesting there. Between the walls of the stronghold, many artists and craftsmen exhibit their work in multiple galleries. Very regularly, exhibitions are offered.
