Located in the department of Hautes-Alpes, Saint-Chaffrey is one of the four villages of the resort of Serre Chevalier Vallée. Composed of the villages of Saint-Chaffrey, Chantemerle, Villard-Laté and La Gerarde, the town is bordering Briançon. It is located at 1365 meters above sea level in the valley of Guisane.

The one that was many times a place of passage for the Tour de France, has many assets to seduce its visitors. Saint-Chaffrey presents an interesting heritage, whether architectural or natural. The natural heritage of Saint-Chaffrey astonishes and seduces by its richness and its great beauty. Nature lovers can only enjoy their holidays in this village of the Hautes-Alpes.

Serre Chevalier is the main tourist attraction of the municipality of Saint-Chaffrey. It is a winter sports resort located not far from the Ecrins National Park, and created in 1941 after the construction of the Chantemerle cable car. The largest ski resort in the Southern Alps, it is close to the Italian border and offers many sports activities in winter and summer. Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the 250 kilometers of alpine ski slopes, or the bike park with its ten downhill slopes, its 193 kilometers of cross country tracks and its BMX track. The resort also hosts climbing sites, a via ferrata, hiking trails, lakes for swimming or a skate park. Not far, the village of Chantemerle, part of Saint-Chaffrey, is the starting point of the ski lifts of the resort.

Natural sites are not lacking in the municipality of Saint-Chaffrey. During beautiful walks or long hikes, visitors can discover the Col de Granon at 2413 meters above sea level, the cascade of Pisse, the Stone Eggs, or the beautiful peaks of Peyrolles.

The built heritage is not left out, including the chapel Saint-Arnould and its beautiful fresco of the eleventh century, the old coal mine Eduits or the cross of the Cine, 2645 meters above sea level.

Events and festivities

Saint-Chaffrey and its ski resort offer throughout the year various events of all kinds.

In winter, the Saint-Chaffrey market is held every Thursday aisle Small Plans, while it takes place in the Chantemerle neighborhood every Friday between June 16 and November 30.

Art and literature festival in Saint-Chaffrey takes place in February.

In June, Saint-Chaffrey celebrated Midsummer with a musical aperitif, a bull gardiane, a popular prom or even the burning of the famous pyre.

Serre Chevalier resort hosts every July the opera festival Art and Mountain with numerous concerts.

At the end of August, up to the Feast of Saint-Chaffrey, St. Arnould. On this occasion, the city offers a sound and light show, a mass, a garage sale or a ball.
