A commune of more than 13,000 inhabitants, Saint-Fargeau-Ponthierry takes place in Seine-et-Marne, about forty kilometers from Paris and its monuments. Limitrophe of the Essonne via Nainville-les-Roches in particular, it is located fifteen kilometers from Melun, not far from Seine-Port, Nandy or Cesson.
Formerly baroness with Tilly-Maison-Rouge, Saint-Fargeau-Ponthierry knew its hour of glory during the construction of a castle by Henri IV for its mistress, Gabrielle d'Estrées. Former agricultural and viticultural village, the commune of Ile-de-France also saw the passage of General Patton and his armies, in 1944, on a mission to liberate Melun, Belgium and Germany.
Having preserved its charm of yesteryear, the city still presents today an interesting architectural and historical heritage to discover during a stroll by the ponds or in the old city center.
The church of Saint-Ferréol was built in the thirteenth century, then strongly revised in the centuries that followed. From the original building, one can still admire a portal surmounted by an archivolt, as well as a quadrangular bell tower. Inside, the church houses an 18th-century tabernacle representing the martyr of Saint Ferréol, while on the square a former 18th-century Calvary marks the site of the former cemetery. Inscribed with the Historic Monuments, it unveils a pyramidal base decorated with symbols of the Passion of the Christ.
Built in the 18th century, on the remains of an old chapel, the church of Sainte-Marie was demolished following the French Revolution. On the insistence of the inhabitants, a new chapel was rebuilt in the nineteenth century before being replaced a century later by the current church, Sainte-Marie-Mère-de-Dieu. It reveals a typical architecture of the post-war period, with gouter walls pierced with rectangular openings.
Inscribed in the Historical Monuments for its facades and roofs, the former factory of wallpapers Leroy has today been rehabilitated in cultural center, Les 26 Colors. Around, one can also discover the vestiges of the old working city built in the years 1910.
From the old castle of Moulignon, property of the Leroy family, today we can only admire the vestiges of the stables. The castle was unfortunately destroyed, and the park was divided into subdivisions.
As you walk through Saint-Fargeau-Ponthierry, you can discover several washhouses, including the 19th-century Tilly's, as well as the manor of Beaulieu, a 19th-century copy of a small Louis XVI-style castle.
The Seine-Ecole leisure park covers more than 20 hectares and offers activities on the three ponds provided. There are fishing areas, children's playgrounds, beach volleyball courts, picnic areas, introductory wake-boarding and a marina.
The market is held every Thursday and Sunday morning, under the covered market. A Christmas market is also organized at the end of the year.
In July, Seinestivale takes place at the leisure base and offers three days of concerts, hikes and other sporting and cultural activities.
On July 14th, for the National Day, the town offers a ball and fireworks.
