The fatherland of Cardinal Bernis is one of the oldest communities of Vivarais: its soil is occupied from the Iron Age (oppidum of St-Etienne-de-Dion), first mention from the 9th century. In the Middle Ages, its "university of men" receives immense woods that extend from the gorges of the Ardèche to the Rhone lônes. The family of Bernis, famous minister of Louis XV, dominates the lordship until after the Revolution. If the clay is no longer extracted, the economy is based on the olive tree, almond (almond drying) and vineyards (southern Côtes-du-Rhône).
