A fragrant treat, the Carpentras berlingot is thought to have been invented in the early 14th century by one of Pope Clement V's cooks, named Sylvestre. The latter is said to have offered it to the sovereign pontiff with these words: "Honour to BERtrand de GOT…", his real name, which gave us the French word berlingot. It's thanks to the pastry chef and confectioner François Pascal Long, who improved the recipe in 1844, that the Carpentras berlingot became famous.

Made from candied fruit syrup, this hard, translucent pyramid with white stripes is available in various colours, like red, green, yellow and orange, which reflect its various flavours, which are mint, aniseed, lemon, orange… Great for anyone with a sweet tooth!

The Confiserie du Mont Ventoux, a confectioner's in Carpentras, has a little berlingot museum telling the story of the sweet to visitors. You can also take a tour of the factory and sample the sweets.
