Produced in the the Hauts area of Réunion on volcanic soil in the famous natural cirque of Cilaos, the lentil has traditionally been cultivated in this mountainous part of the island since 1857. Sown in April and harvested in September, Cilaos lentils have an exceptional taste when prepared and stewed. They have a fine texture in the mouth as well as being very agreeable to the palate, going wonderfully with a cari or sausage rougail.

The lentil festival that takes place every October in Cilaos celebrates this famous Réunion pulse with a series of exhibitions, conferences, tastings and a gastronomy competition. Street entertainment, concerts, fairground rides and the election of the Lentil Queen complete the programme of this festive event.
