While the city of Nîmes is famous for its olive oil, it's also known for its PGI strawberry, a sweet fruit that's loved by gourmets. The ever-popular Nîmes strawberry is mainly derived from two well-known species in France: the famous Gariguette, and Ciflorette, both of which are very fragrant.
Grown on the ground under shelters in the Costières to the south of the city, the Nîmes strawberry is the earliest French variety, since it appears in shops from early March onwards. This treat, which is enjoyed on its own, with whipped cream or fromage blanc, has continued to grow in popularity since the 1960s.
